Legendary Book Review

Legendary ~ Stephanie Garber

WARNING: This review will be probably be an unpopular opinion!

This book was disappointing for me. Perhaps it is because it has been a while since I read Caraval. Perhaps it is because I am finding myself disliking YA lately. Perhaps this book was just not my style of book. Despite all of this, I did finish the book but will not be completing this series. I feel like this series should have ended with Caraval. I remember Caraval with fondness for the atmosphere, the world and the characters, but I did not feel ANY of that same fondness for this book. Not even close.
I was not drawn to the character that was Donatella. She starts off by being a more adventures independent free-spirit. Then somewhere along the way, she is tied to two boys despite having stated that she never saw the need to kiss the same boy twice? Similarly Scarlett has somehow found herself in a love triangle, and it’s by her own choosing?  She wants to create some competition? I for one do not even like that scenario and do not believe the Scarlett from Caraval would have done this.
The whole plot of this book was to find Donatella and Scarlett’s mother. However, I never felt the pull for this course and certainly was not interested in if they found her or not sadly. I felt as if this somehow pulled us away from the wonderful carnival atmosphere of Caraval. I felt that this book was more fluff than substance. At times I felt like there were whole pages of adjectives that were not pertinent to the story and which led me to skimming over A LOT to focus on the actual story line.  I know this is not a popular opinion regarding the book. MANY people loved this book, but this is just my opinion. Sometimes sequels should not be written. Some books are better as standalones.
